I have to admit, I completely let the blog down last summer. I had big dreams and fulfilled none of them. There is nothing like a fresh start and a new year to try again.
This year, things are off to an early start! It is the end of February and seeds are in the greenhouse! Not all, but some of the earlier varieties such as cauliflower, broccoli, cabbages and peppers. The greenhouse does a great job of getting warm during the days, and we bought a space heater to keep it warm at night. It gets wonderful light, so I am hoping I will not have leggy seedlings this year.
Another change this year are our containers. We have opted to use cow-pots rather than cans. Cow pots are made from manure and are compostable. It gives the seedlings plenty of room to spread out, but are able to be put directly into the ground. This will lesson the shock for the plants. Bonus: The manure in the pots will actually add great nutrients to the soil as is decomposes.
Perhaps the biggest change to come this year will be raised beds. Barney found an amazing deal on some cedar, and so will be making those before the plants go in the ground. I am hoping the raised beds will significantly decrease the area of weeding I have to do each week. Last year it got overwhelming and we lost over a quarter of the garden to weeds.
I am hoping this will be the best growing season yet!
