This year has been one for the books - literally! February has been the coldest month ever recorded on Long Island. Not only was it cold, but snowy too. It just snowed another 9 inches on Friday, and we still had a good amount of snow on the ground from the previous storms. As I mentioned in my last post, plans for the construction of the greenhouse have halted due to the snow, and therefore the first bit of planting was delayed. However, with the forecast for the next two weeks in the high 40s, I am being hopeful and starting the first of my seedlings. By the time they germinate, the greenhouse should be almost ready. Until then, sitting near a window will have to be their light source.
All fall and winter Barney collected tin cans from our store bought groceries and punched wholes in the bottom. I filled these with a mix of potting soil and pete moss before adding the seeds. I then placed them in our indoor pop-up "greenhouse" to help warm up the soil. Most of the seeds need about 70 degree soil or above for germination, so any hints on how to get the soil warm are welcome!
Seeds planted today:
I expect most of these to germinate in 7-10 days, but it could take up to 3 weeks for some. Now its a waiting game to see what sprouts! Crossing my fingers!
